Moodboard

In a Nutshell

A moodboard is an inspiration panel that conveys the visual tone of a project. In theory: a compass showing direction. In practice: the visual form of 'this is exactly what I want, but different.'

What It Really Means

A moodboard shows what is hard to put into words: the feeling, color, and texture of a project. A good one builds a shared language faster than long meetings.

But a moodboard is a starting point, not a goal. Copying reference visuals one-to-one wears down the fine line between inspiration and imitation.

The danger is that a moodboard fixes expectations. Once a brand falls in love with an image on the board, it becomes hard to accept a different but better result.

A moodboard exists to show direction, not to freeze the destination. Used well it aligns; used badly it imprisons.
