Engagement

In a Nutshell

Engagement refers to the contacts users make with content, such as likes, comments, shares, saves, or clicks. In theory: an indicator of interest. In practice: sometimes reducing all creative value to a single number.

What It Really Means

Engagement is an important metric in digital communication. But like every important metric, it's dangerous when misinterpreted.

A piece of content getting high engagement doesn't always mean it's good. Sometimes controversy, misunderstanding, or superficial curiosity also bring engagement.

In agencies, engagement often becomes the number that determines the content's fate. This pushes brands toward more easily consumed, less risky, or louder content.

Engagement is important. But it's not meaning on its own.
