Visual

In a Nutshell

A visual is a photo, illustration, graphic, or design element that supports the message in communication work. In theory: an element that strengthens the narrative. In practice: sometimes decoration that covers the idea.

What It Really Means

When used well, the visual carries the idea. When used poorly, it suffocates it. In agencies, visual selection is often discussed as much as the idea itself.

A visual being beautiful is not enough. It needs to be right. If it's not appropriate for the brand, the message, the audience, and the channel, it's just decoration.

Stock photo smiles, fake meeting scenes, and campaign visuals where everyone looks overly happy easily become generic for this reason.

The visual exists to attract attention. But if it's unclear what it's drawing attention to, it just creates noise.
